I'm needing to use 3ds max 2010 for my modeling and preferably texturing, but the exporter for the format I need only works in 3ds max 9.
My only problems is that I can't seem to get the textures to transfer between. The .max format is completely unreadable by the opposite program and so far I've tried .3ds, autodesk formats but they are texture-less when i import them back in...
Isn't there a single format 3ds max can export a model with textures and then import the model with the textures back in?

Well that's what I figured but I must be doing something wrong.
When exporting to fbx i get some errors about the material couldn't be exported.
It's very frustrating because I'm trying to design a level, and test it in the process... but anytime I make any change to geometry i need to retexture the whole thing =[
"Warning: Material export failed" is the error.
From google searching the only thing I can find is something about the image format.
The images I'm using are meant for textures, they are 512x512 and TGA format.

I'd be surprised if something CAN'T read .obj, it's basically the bitmap of 3d.
Your mesh may be split into triangles though when you export it, though.

It's just the textures/materials I'm having problems exporting/importing.
I don't know much about 3ds max because honestly it's more complex than an automobile engine. I think I may need a "material list" or something?
