Ok serious tyme now:

Try using a larger brush for smudging, and then sharpen. Try a 19px round brush and then mess around with some different size and scattering settings.

absolutely hate #5, no offence. you were closer to it being good with #2. #3 & 4 are alright, but still not good enough to stand alone, they are better suited to be backgrounds
