Cheat Engine

I hope this the correct area, anyway I just wanted to get some information when it comes to cheating on older games (2001) old.

I've been playing spamum, completed it a few times and wanted to have some fun with stats you cannot normally change or go over a certain limit.

I've been using cheat engine to lets say, Find "Strength" I go to the character screen, I do the first scan (Usually 4 byte. exact value) scan the original value, then I add to it each time until I narrow it down.

I find the value and edit it, but the stat does not physically change, however I know it's linked to it because if I add another point in-game, the value I found in CE updates to whatever my strength is.

spamum is a Single Player RPG (Think Baulders Gate or Diablo II) but I'm just wondering if anyone can help me out with this.

Basically my goal is to physically edit the stat Via CE because it's "cap" differs by race, I want to mess around with it.
