at the moment the best physics engine is PhysX and all developers know it.
Havok many times slower than PhysX and can't handle as many items as PhysX does.
at the moment there is a fair amount of games that works with PhysX and many that are getting upgraded to use it in their physX engine.
even in the MMORPGs environment, the most waited MMORPGs like Blade and soul or AION, they both are using PhysX integrated in the UnrealEngineIII that they are using as source game engine.
btw, PhysX was not meant for the particles. though it can handle some simple particle systems cabale of simulate fluids. it wasnt meant for very complex and hi count particle systems but with combination of CUDA you can have very impressive particle systems in real time.
PhysX was ment for physics , rigidbody, soft body, cloth, fluids simulation.
The only reason Physx ends up in games is because nvidia flashes some $$$ and developers go ahead and put in stupid features like PAPER THAT MOVES WHEN YOU WALK OVER IT.
PS: physx can easily cripple your performance because of the idiotic fact that IT IS TRYING TO RUN A SIMULATION OF BATMAN'S CAPE RUBBING AGAINST HIS THIGHS WHILE MILLIONS OF BITS OF PAPER SHUFFLE AROUND ON THE FLOOR FOR NO GOOD REASON -- all on the same device that is trying to render your demanding video game!
Go try hardware physx in the new batman game and marvel as your framerate drops to a third of what it was with it off, fast!
With Havok backed by Intel (hell, they own Havok now) and AMD, you can bet they've put no shortage of resources in it making sure it's fast and usable on those platforms. With the rise of DX11 and it's new and aptly named 'compute shader' along with OpenCL, developers have more choices than ever.
PS I know for a fact AION does not use the Unreal Engine, it used the old CryEngine that powered Far Cry as a base.
I just researched a little on an old archive and you are right I remembered wrong, AION is using Cry engine.
I remembered wrong because it was announced in the same archive as the games developed with the Unreal Engine 3 in an archive of mmosite.
and PhysX is all about destructible environment and the fluids simulations, cloth is just an add to it but the most impressive feature is to handle the destructible environment which makes the game much more realistic.
I would say the 275 but I'm personally running a few 9800GTX+'s for now, I'm waiting for DX11 to hit before I get new video cards. So if his current video card is not dying yet he should prob wait a fewmonths for DX11 cards. _________________
