On xp say you have an account with like:
useruser
passwordpass
make an account on vista (non limited/guest) with the exact information.
Also then make a network drive on your vista machine and then map a network drive on XP to that network drive.

| Alternatively, I believe you can enable Guest access in Control Panel > Network option. (Don't know what the options are exactly, I don't have Windows installed anywhere.)

okay so i got the network drive on vista but im still unclear about the network drive mapping |
Make a share on the Vista machine. Go to My Computer (or any explorer window) on the XP computer and go to Tools > Map Network Drive. Browse to the folder you just shared. Have it reconnect at login to keep it after your current session.

For XP: Just enable file sharing
For Vista: You will need to select Guest and make it have full permission and then make it as Co-Owner.
Selecting "EveryOne" will not work.

Adding the guest account is for those who does not want to add a password to their Vista's account, but with a password it's much easier.
Anyway where is the guest account (just for curiosity)?
Right click on a folder you want to share and select properties.
Click on the Sharing Tab and select Advanced Sharing.
Enable (check box) share this folder, click apply follow by permissions and Add.
Click Advanced, then Find now there is a guest account in the list.

Not true if the guest account is enabled on the Vista machine. (At least I think that's it. I had computers networked and neither had passworded users.

You could read about Cygwin and use rsync, or use something based on rsync with google.
DeltaCopy maybe?
Rsync will only replace what's changed so you don't have to waste time with wasting bandwidth. There are also options to preserve last modified times, and a lot more (see man rsync output).
