Standard Maya explosion from outliner rendered with medium quality Mental Ray so it didn't take a million years to render. Some of the frames are gone/messed up cause I accidentally overwrote them and canceled during the overwriting so I had to place some manually.

I'm not sure how hard it is to make stuff like that in Maya, so I'm just gonna say that it looks good.
I'm curious about Maya though, I've heard some good things about it.

| It's the 'pro' version of 3ds Max and is used more commonly for proffesional animating/modeling while 3ds Max is mostly used for games and such.

says who?
its just the competence of 3Ds Max and they failed , autodesk bough maya like a year ago also the other competence software for 3D, Softimage.
now what autodesk is doing is just to rip off the programs they bough and add the features in 3DsMax, slowly it is making a monopoly.
I must admit that smoke looks good but 3Ds Max with FumeFX and Afterburn looks way better.

The explosion was really nice but I find the smoke weird. If it was smoke, I think it should be going up^.

| Maya was owned by Alias a while back and since Autodesk bought it, it has been getting better with more features and plug-in compatibility similar to that of 3ds Max. Maya also has some plug-ins that make it better such as Shave and a Haircut (realistic fur program; used in the latest King Kong) and Real Flow (dynamic liquid). With proper editing, Maya can produce much better FX than 3ds Max with Plug Ins.

Beginning looked good.
As for the smoke:

This.
Also, there's a random flash somewhere near the start, and the smoke skips a few frames while it's moving o.o
either way, it's quite good =0

only thing that maya haves that 3Dsmax doesn't is Renderman (( Pixar's render engine ))
3dsmax haves HairFX or Hairtrix for realistic hair, Real Flow for liquids too, rayfire for more complex dynamics, also PhysX, Thinking Particles, and as many movies are made in 3DsMax as in Maya.
