I didn't do the line art, a friend did but I did trace his line art with the pen tool. So far I've been learning different shading techniques and this is what I have so far.

Any tips to improve shading?

*ignore the fact that it still doesn't have lighting*
*focusing on shading at the moment*

Eh they look better when resized to a smaller image, so I didn't really make those white things oval, lol.

Thanks though :D

Is it THAT unnoticeable?! Well I guess that means I need to use a darker shade. Thanks.

Harder shading is needed, it's incredibly soft and hard to notice.

whats more important than shading is the lineart. Some parts should be rounder, there's white around the lines in the shirt and the line colour should be different, you could do it all black or you can do the following:

but try to avoid using the colour you're using.

But the style I'm trying to learn is called soft cell shading. ;_; It's supposed to be soft though I agree than I need darker shades for it to be noticeable.

Mk, I guess I went a little overboard when I changed the color of the line in the hair and skin.

SHIT!~ well those lines are made with 1 px hard brush anyway. I could easily delete it.

Also that tutorial, I've read that before.

Looks cool, make the hair shading much darker though.
The red outlines on the shirt look weird.

Nothing to say that hasn't been said, the white brushing on the eyes is a little weird. Maybe set it to a different blending mode?

I've read that, the tutorial doesn't follow real soft cell.
True soft cell shading has only outlines in the 2d perspective, or no lines at all.

The first appleseed movie was soft cell, and as you can see outlines were added for each smartlayer (calculation of z order) but everything else was just contrast.

What really annoys me is artist going on about how they use cell shading on their art.
Cell shading is a method used by rendering programs, if you're just painting or drawing then it's not cell shading at all, but just a style.
