I know this is a question that's been asked numerous times in this forum, but looking at the previous threads on this issue, I felt that I should just make a new one, for various reasons.

Anyway, the only coding I've done is in HTML, and various obscure coding languages that barely even matter.

I'm a pretty fast learner, and fairly bright, but I have no previous experience in any advanced programming languages. I'm looking for a general purpose language, and preferably a modern one, or at least, one that will not become obsolete anytime soon. I don't know much about all of the various programming languages out there, but I'm definitely interested in Python, Ruby, Perl, and any languages similar to them. I've considered C++ and C#, but for some reason got the sense that I'd rather learn other languages. However, I'd consider trying either of them out if a few people recommend them.

From the looks of it, I think I'd also prefer a 'high-level' language. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but it seems as if that's the future of programming.

I believe I have a general idea of OOP, but I may be mistaken, so if someone could try to briefly explain it, or link me to a good explanation of it, that'd be great.

If there are any threads, posts, or even other websites that you think might help me, I'd appreciate you posting them.

C# is a far cry from C or C++.

I think you may enjoy it. It's certainly more elegant and manageable at first glance than its derivatives.

what do you want to do...

C is a very good language, most resources you'll have to find yourself since some documentation or lack of it (standard) is what makes C the biggest annoyance for me at any rate (compare it to java, the api has paragraphs explaining how to use System.out.print... maybe thats wrong. w.e)

C is used in windows and linux, good to hop to asm to do some low level hardcore stuff, flexible and the thing with 'oh free up memory,' stuff like that, I think is nonsense.

when you start programming, you do little things, so what if you allocate 1024 kb for a string, wo wo, not like that will really slow down his computer, as he gets better, he'll know how to handle these things

no i don't actually, i just purely don't believe the 'double-edged' sword that most preach about c and its problems, then again, I don't program much, hardly at all actually

Great, then maybe you should stop giving advice to someone who is trying to learn programming when you "hardly program at all." Thanks for admitting it though.

Ontopic I suggest C/C++. They're good languages and are OS-portable. And as mentioned, C# is also very nice.

Firstly, Pineapple, as I believe I stated, I considered looking at each and every thread similar to this one, but after I read through the first two, it became apparent that most were not quite relevant enough. I'm most likely going to choose one of the languages I already listed in the OP, and if not one of them, then one similar. I'm pretty sure I included some general guidelines to the languages I'm looking for as well. With these things in mind, most of the threads in question are already irrelevant, and then, most of these threads are outdated, leaving few actually useful ones. Finding these threads is another matter, and thus, I'd rather take advantage of the 'New Thread' button I just so happen to have right here, and gather recent, relevant information.

Back to the languages themselves, I feel like C/C++ would be a good language to learn, but I also feel like I'd rather try a high level language. I couldn't tell you exactly why, but the idea just appeals to me more. In that vein, I'm still considering C#, and I think it's definitely between C#, Perl, Ruby, and Python. Of course, I'd love to look at any languages similar to these.

Anyone know any striking differences between Ruby and Python? I feel like I should be able to cross one off the list because of their similarity.

how about trying a completely different language like haskell. it will change the way you approach programming problems and is great for beginners to learn about data types since it is so strongly typed

i would disagree with it being 'tough' for beginners since it is the first language that they taught in my computer science uni course. it was intended that even people that had not ever touched programming could pick it up quickly

i'm for C# as well, it's quite modern and that's what i like to use. if you choose that check out spawnfestis' blog, it's really useful.
