Just watched Die Hard 4. Can someone really do that? Is it even possible to hack a country?

No, it's impossible. All the really 'good' stuff, like the info on wall street, nuc-uh-ler missles, etc are all stored offline, so you could only 'hack' it by manually being there and messing with the system, but even then it's stored on multiple servers so there's really not all that much you can do.
