can anyone tell me why is it we need to set the CPU voltage higher/lower when we do overclocking?

The signal to set a 0 to a 1 or a 1 to a 0 has to be fired somehow. The frequency of this happening ramps up as clockspeed increases. Keep in mind that energy is also lost during this.

I guess the most brain dead way to explain it would be that with higher voltage comes "stronger" clock ticks or pulses.

Instability in overclocking comes from error that stem from a 0/1 not setting to the proper state quickly enough... or heat causing failures.

Then the mobo will try to handle it and will probably overdo the shit out of it.

Don't stay on auto when overclocking.
