If I download an .exe program like say.. a keygen or something like that and it's pack with viruses, but I never click on it or open it, just downloaded and place it onto my desktop, will the the virus be activated?

Not until you run it.

I'd probably change the file extension to .virus or something just so I wouldn't run it accidentally.

Wrong, it can acually run itself.

yes, downloaded viruses can run automatically. (e.g. if you download them directly to your startup folder in start->programs and then reboot...)

Yes, and I'd like to see how he could make an .exe that if you download it, it gets executed immidiatly without the user running it.

That requires an autorun.inf file. The OP's referring to one, stand-alone .exe file. With other files (or replacing another file with it) sure, it's possible, but with just the .exe I can't imagine anything happening without user interaction.

Virus attached to an email "auto installs"
It is also possible that the very webpage you download the file from can execute it after download, resulting in an auto install. The only interaction you had was downloading it.

Then you get a domino effect of it installing to other locations making copies of itself or attaching to other files and emailing itself to other pc's and repeating the process.

"
A computer virus is a small bit of software which is designed to enter your computer by stealth and self-install. Once in place the virus will begin multiplying to other PCs which can be reached through yours as it starts unleashing whatever havoc it was designed to create. A computer virus can either be destructive in that it erases selected files, or entire hard drives, or less destructive in that all it does is send thousands of email messages from your computer to everyone in your address book. In between those two levels are virus types which will look for specific files, such as word processing files, and send those to everyone that you know."
