if i were to switch from a 2.4 ghz single core processor
to a 2.4 dual core processor

what would be the performance increase? like would it be twice as fast? 1.5 times faster? or what?

Also is this a good deal on a computer? (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227157)

if not, could you recommend a good computer with a similar price?

it`d be almost 2 times faster because it`s dual? depends on what speed your 2nd processor runs at. you just multiply (ghz speed) by 2 and you`ll get what speed it runs total. Same for Quad core, multiply by 4. Speeds vary though.

I though dual core meant like, if you had a 2.4ghz dual core processor, it would really be 2 x 1.2ghz processors in one.

No, no, stop now.

OP: It depends on the architecture of the processor along with a few other factors. For example, a 2.4GHz Pentium 4 CPU will be much, much slower than a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo with 1 core disabled, since the latter would be much more efficient clock-for-clock.

Also depends on other factors, such as possible hyper-threading (can't recall if pentium 4s had it), whether programs are multi-threaded or not, etc etc.

An application will only take advantage of the other core if it is multi-threaded.
