Im upgrading my cpu to a quad core, and this is my first cpu install. I understand how to do it fine, but is thermal paste REALLY needed? will it affect anything it i dont put any on it? If it is a necessity, which kind would you suggest? _________________

AS Humper said, it will over-heat. Probably cause it to fail.
It's cheap, and worth it. _________________

Thermal Compound is pretty much the heat contact between the CPU and the heatsink, so if you don't put it, most likely no or very little heat will transfer to the heatsink which will render the heatsink/fan useless.
So yes it is necessary, it isn't that hard at all ethier. However I would suggest using mx-2 as humper suggested as the stuff that comes with your heatsink most likely isn't that great. |

When I talk about thermal compound coming with the heatsink, it's in a package so you still have to apply it.
What I'm trying to point out is that that stuff that comes with your heatsink or your CPU most likely isn't that great and there's much better stuff that will give you much better performance such as Arctic Cooling's mx-2. |

You want to reuse it from another PC? :S
I'd spend 10 bucks to be sure you don't fry a new processor.
$10 is better than having to buy a new processor, or more.
Edit: I'm confused. _________________

I personally use isopropyl alcohol with cotton swabs, try get the alcohol proof as close to 100% as you can get.
You can get it from your local pharmacy. |

LOL ok here i have two computers, the one that im using right now has a E8400 and the other one has a Q8400. Im getting another Q8400 to replace the E8400 and since im getting a new thermal compound i want to apply to both computers. Now the one that had the Q8400 from the start i was wondering do i have to remove the stock thermal gel? or can i just apply new stuff? _________________
