In vista, you can change the power settings from power saver to high performance. How do you do this in XP?

In XP, I tried all the power schemes and none of them seem to lower the noise coming from my laptop fan. In vista, when i change it to power saver, the noise goes down a lot. So i was hoping i could do this to XP.

How would i do this for XP? Maybe some 3rd party programs?

When your in XP, it's the same thing as vista, just go to power options in control panel or click on the power icon in the taskbar.
For reducing your fan, when I want to reduce it, I select the maximum power management option (max battery) then wait for 2 minutes. The fan after seems to go down.

why do you want the noise to go down? it's getting louder because there's obviously more heat being produced from a higher load, and when that load's reduced they're going to slow down and produce less noise. i'd rather my laptop fans make a shit load of noise than overheat.

but if you still want to fiddle, look for some 3rd party power management that supports your model, for me it's Power4Gear which changes some settings when running off the battery.

Just download Speedfan or i8kfangui (depending on the laptop's manufacturer and set it up the way you want it to work.
