What are the uses of matrices, if any, besides solving linear systems?

Linear Algebra covers many of the basic uses of matrices, such as solving linear systems (as you mentioned), applications to vector spaces and linear transformations. These branch out and are the basis of a lot of more modern and applicable mathematics.
