Windows 7 is praised by many users as the best OS yet and the reason to ditch XP, but some users still has old programs they would like to run. Microsoft gave a solid reason for them XP lovers as Windows 7 got a feature called Windows 7 XP mode. This feature (a separated add-on) lets users run Windows 7 and old programs that will only work with XP.

Many users who heard about this can finally get on with their lives as they know Windows 7 is OS to look forward to and let XP rest in peace. Now here is the catch.

First not all versions of Windows 7 will allow you to run Windows 7 XP mode and second users are required to get a processor that supports hardware virtualization.

AMD has done it right and made all current processors support hardware virtualization (AMD-V), with the exception of Sempron and processor before REV F2. Another simple way is to determine if your AMD CPU has AMD-V is to know, does it run DDR2? If yes and it's not a Sempron then your CPU will run Windows 7 XP mode.*
Note that with them Opteron processors, not all will support AMD-V so check out AMD's Opteron site to verify.

Intel on the other hand being an idiot since their targeting at different sectors of the consumers at different price ranges. Most cheap processor has hardware virtualization (VT) disabled and the only way if you want to run Windows 7 XP mode is to get a new cpu that supports it.

Currently majority of the quads cores with the 8000 series lacks VT, but Intel is planning to make a Q8000 series with VT enabled and this will bring mass confusion as to which one will support VT and which will not. All the consumer can do is probably look at the sSpec or serial number.

To determined whether your Intel cpu has VT, here is the link below.

link

* If a cpu has hardware virtualization support, your bios needs to have this feature enabled as well. If your bios does not have this feature then no matter what you won't be able to run Windows 7 XP mode.

Windows 7 XP mode is only for Windows 7 Professional and above.

It's all about business. Old products = Cheap + lacks functionality. New Products = Expensive + Functionality enabled.
Overall, Intel is all about "You pay for what you get".

16 Bit applications?
WTF 16-Bit program has not been remade and is not 50 times better in 32/64 Bit version?
If people are still using 16Bit applications they are too old and wrinkly to run Windows 7...

Darn, my Q8200 doesn't support it.
Although I have no intentions of upgrading from XP any time soon.

Win7 XPM is targeted mosly for business use where custom made programs that cost thousands of dollars will only run on a specific OS.

Why would I need to use XP mode in Windows 7? I do not have any incompatible apps that won't run in Windows 7.

Quite a few older games (example, Diablo II) won't run right in Vista/later.
16-bit applications, I don't know much about their compatibility, although they're not going to run in a 64-bit Windows OS.

Also, have any of you guys heard about 7's potential pricing?
It seems nobody is getting better at the game.

Thats exactly why i run Phenom II =D, for some reason AMD gives me more speed than Intel with identical hardware so I went AMD. I dont hate Intel but AMD just seems better and cheaper.

Based on your post, it's states your taking this as a fact based on your own Phenom II based PC, but it's obvious that you never got a chance to test out fully beef up Intel rig which if you did, then I'll bet you'll keep you mouth shut since your claims isn't backed up by any valid results.

intel is usually better for higher end processors. AMD is for cheap crappy processors at lower prices.

Like I said I dont hate Intel I just find AMD better. Im not gona argue that Intel may be faster with certain rigs because I know it can, but yo cant say that AMD is slower since none of you never even touched a Dragon-Platform that beat Intel by 30%. Again I'm not saying it AMD says it, google it.
