|
|
In America, the benefits of recycling are stated everywhere. Children in grade school are drilled that recycling is a must. They are bombarded with exaggerated myths and facts such as recycling saves trees, recycling is cheaper than landfills, America will bury itself in trash if Americans refuse to recycle, and that America is running out of landfills. However recycling in some cases is cheaper, uses less energy, and creates less pollution than starting from scratch.
In the 1980s, the EPA, media, and many environmental groups cried about America’s trash problem and the decline of landfills. They were correct that the number of landfills in America has decreased. “In 1979, there were an estimated 18,500 landfills in the nation. In 1990 there were only about 6,300, and by 1995 it was estimated that only about 3,000 would still be open. In just 16 years the number of landfills dropped by 84%.” (Waste Facts and Figures) However, the Clean Air Council failed to mention that the landfills were supersizing and greatly expanding their landfill capacity. In the 1990s, nationwide landfill capacity was estimated at to 14 years however by 2001 capacity increased to 18 years (NSWMA). Another death knell to this myth is that if America was to take all of its trash for the next 100 years and placed in one landfill. The resulting landfill would only be 255 feet tall with an area of 100 miles squared (Lomborg). 100 miles may sound like a lot however Austin is roughly 300 miles squared. This is a fine example of muckrakers exacerbating fear into a popular myth.

Don't post your work here, your teacher will find it and think you copied someone, that's what happened to me with one of my assignments, my teacher googled the first sentence and seen that "ControlAltDelete" posted it and I just copied it. ;-;

The resulting landfill would only be 255 feet tall with an area of 100 miles squared (Lomborg). (Combine the two sentences above, it would be grammatically correct.) 100 miles may sound like a lot (Period!, or comma, and put a "but" after it. If but is put in, "however" is unnecessary, and must be removed.) however Austin is roughly 300 miles squared. This is a fine example of muckrakers exacerbating fear into a popular myth.

You're one to talk Waxxup. You seem to use commas instead of fullstops a lot.
And yes, I am well aware this will probably result in a warning.
