Most people try solving one side then try solving another side without paying attention to the previously solved side. The most common wasy is solving it in layers, you get one side with all of the color piece lines up to their center and sides then you solve the "second layer", then the top layer.

3x3 is referring to a single face of the cube, a single face of a standard rubik's cube has 3 blocks across and 3 blocks down.

here're some of my records:
2x2x2 cube: 8 seconds
3x3x3 cube: ~ 1 minute
4x4x4 cube: 106 seconds
5x5x5 cube: I don't remember, but it is shorter than a 4x4x4 time.
(5x5x5 is easier than a 4x4x4)
