Come up with the hooking method yourself.

VxD is the old device driver format.

Here is an example of hooking DirectX 9, just adapt it to fit DirectInput. It's practically the same process.

The game uses DX9 so it'll be the same?

Yes. Except you use 9 instead of 8.
