| Shanobi wrote: | The Conficker worm may have infected more machines than previously thought, according to Internet infrastructure provider OpenDNS.
The company said Wednesday that 500,000 of its users have been infected with the latest variant of the worm, called Conficker.C. OpenDNS has more than 10 million users worldwide, the company said.
OpenDNS wouldn't say exactly what percentage of its users were infected by the worm, but the Conficker.C infections it counted were much higher than expected, according to David Ulevitch, the founder of OpenDNS.
Conficker.C began using a new algorithm on Wednesday to look for instructions from its creator, prompting speculation that it might be readying for an attack. According to security experts, however, the worm has been quiet so far.
Previous estimates had placed the number of Conficker infections, including all variants, at anywhere between a few million and 10 million PCs, but according to Ulevitch the worm is "probably bigger than people think, based on what we're seeing here."
OpenDNS is used by just a tiny fraction of the Internet's estimated 1.5 billion users, so its numbers provide a tiny picture of a much larger population.
The company tracked Conficker.C infections by analyzing the DNS (Domain Name System) requests made on its network and looking for a special pattern of DNS lookups that is unique to the worm. It did not provide data on the number of computers infected by older versions of the worm, known as Conficker.A and Conficker.B.
According to OpenDNS, Vietnam has been hardest hit by the worm, with 13 percent of the total infections it tracked. The countries with the next-largest number of infections are Brazil, the Philippines, Indonesia and Algeria.
i cant post the link but just google it and yull see it the second site this posted a hour ago. |
Apparently, on The 1st of April, a virus is going to be released, or 'activated' and will effect millions of computers.
- Some say it will get through windows security holes
- i've heard that it will get on your computer by the popular websites..
- Some people say that It can't be stopped because it auto-patches itself.

So.. Does anyone know
What exactly is conficker C? and if it's going to effect so many computers, why isn't it being stopped?
I will keep this first post edited.

It's not being stopped because it was so ingeniously built!

Conficker the virus itself is designed to infect and sit and wait on PC's. The whole idea of the virus is to create a network of infected PC's. It works like a trojan in a way, it blocks access to anti-virus sites effectively removing their ability to update to recognise the new strains of the virus. It also lowers PC security settings and disables the update of it.
They can't patch it as the virus is able to self patch to get around fixes that windows and anti-virus programs put out to disable it. They are expecting Conflicker C to be much stronger than the last 2 strains... and they are expecting it to take action. (Basically, the virus is designed to create a network of computers to send spam emails out in mass)

They don't know what it is going to do... They just know that it is a sleeping botnet (already) of computers, that on April 1 might do something.
They could probably do way more than send spam emails... Hahaha.
I REALLY REALLY hope they attack the root name servers...

| Yes, it's purely speculation... i don't think its going to be very massive though. I think people just like to blow things out of proportion.

Now i am reading that it seems most people are Conficker B, which is not susceptible to this "Conficker update"... Thus, null.

I'm not sure if it enters through an exploit ( i don't think so ) or it enters from a file you download....
I think it is the second one, but it thrives and mutates from the exploit on your computer.

I aint going to worry though, i shall be good. If not, i have my reformat
