Hi, I have a computer running Ubuntu 8.04, and I have it all set up, but for some reason, I can't access it remotely. I know my public IP and I used it to create a free host at dyndns.com, it had worked before, but all of the sudden my server was acting funny.

I have Comcast Cable internet and I am connected via Ethernet cable directly into our modem, Netgear model CG814WGv2. I have forwarded ports:

80 TCP 192.168.0.99 (My server's local IP that I set myself and have confirmed with "ifconfig")

21 BOTH 192.168.0.99

22 TCP 192.168.0.99

9686 BOTH 192.168.0.99

9999 BOTH 192.168.0.99

I have a static IP for my server. What is wrong? I can access the server from within my network but my friend cannot access it from his home... Here, please try it for me or provide me with some tips: http://www.nikolaireznov ,ath.cx (btw, ignore the content, it is just an experimental site) I can find any additional information you may need.

Ubuntu isn't the best linux distro (in general) but i understand you used it since you are new to Linux.

Now, there are most likely no firewall ups...

How do you portforward with a modem?

Comcrap blocks port 80 if you don't get the "business" package or whatever IIRC.

Yeah, some cable companies have two tiers. You can always do it from another port, right?

Thanks for the help guys, but the problem was that earlier I set up a static IP, well the vi editor is kinda hard to control for a newbie, so some how, it changed from DHCP, but didn't save the other changes that I made to the network/interfaces file.

So when I tried "/etc/init.d/networking restart" it said "Could not bring up eth0 Not all variables found" Or something similar to that. So I changed the permission of the network/interfaces and edited it with WinSCP, I set all the values. So the direct problem was, it literally didn't have the information to connect to the internet.
