TL;DR: Popular boy, Girl wanted him. Boy told her to send naked pics. She did. Pics texted all over school, Boy now registered as sex offender.

LOS ALAMITOS – A group of students were recently disciplined after sending nude photos of an 8th-grader via cell phone messages at McAuliffe Middle School, district officials said today.

The student, who is not identified because she is a minor, took naked pictures of herself and sent them to at least one friend. The photos were taken off campus and not during school hours, Los Alamitos Unified Superintendent Gregory Franklin said.

The photos were circulated by a group of students at school using photo messaging, Franklin said.

Franklin said he does not know the exact number of students who received the photo message but said it is less than 10.

The girl stayed home for a few days while administrators and her parents addressed how to approach the situation.

The group of students who circulated the photos received in-house suspensions, by which they attended school but could not go to classes, Franklin said.

"We are pretty satisfied with the students' response and the parents' response," he said. "We're going to take a look within the district to come up with some preventative measures."

Teenagers taking risqué cell phone pictures and forwarding them on – often called "sexting" – is a widespread phenomenon, leaving some school officials, law enforcement agencies and district attorneys' offices across the country in uncharted territory, officials say.

Three students at Laurel Continuation High School on Feb. 5 were also involved in sending racy phone messages at school, said Cpt. Bruce McAlpine of the Los Alamitos Police Department.

The incident was reported to police who, in turn, took it to the District Attorney's office to question whether the cell phone messages were considered child pornography. No criminal charges were filed and police took an incident report, McAlpine said.

McAlpine said police were not involved in the McAuliffe incident.

Some states are prosecuting teens involved in "sexting" with child pornography or felony obscenity. Some may even be registered as a sex offender, according to the Associated Press.

Shelli Wynants, professor of Child and Adolescent Development at Cal State Fullerton, said the behavior is not uncharacteristic of teenagers.

“Risk taking is natural in adolescents and it’s to be expected,” Wynants said. “However, now they have the technology to make instantaneous errors.

“In general, this has to do with brain development. We know now that the adolescent brain is not fully developed until their early 20s. Teens don’t always think about the consequences.”

Various cases show that some are saying the sexually explicit behavior is more than simply routine teenage rebellion.

A teen from Indiana faces felony obscenity charges for sending a picture of his private parts to some female classmates. Another Indiana teenage boy was charged with child pornography for sending similar photo messages, according to the Associated Press.

Seven students in Pennsylvania were also brought up on child pornography charges after three high school girls forwarded scantily clad photos of themselves, according to the Associate Press.

A 15-year-old in Ohio faced the same charges but they will be dropped if the teen complies with a curfew, no cell phone and supervised Internet activity for a few months, the Associated Press reported.

Wynants said felony charges are too extreme for teenagers involved in “sexting”.

“When you think about what these charges mean for adults, it is just not the same thing for teens,” she said. “I don’t think they necessarily think about how this can get out of their hands and out of their control.

“If we want to help prevent it, I think we need…to help educate them and not severely punish them to set examples.”

Representatives from the Orange County District Attorney's office said they could not report on cases such as these that involved minors. However, if an adult was caught texting sexual photos of a minor, furnishing child pornography charges could be pursued, prosecutor said.

While the Los Alamitos district does not intend to go as far as some of these out-of-state cases, Franklin said it is important for teens to understand the harm "sexting" can cause.

"I don't think they fully understand the repercussions of actions like this," he said. "This could affect them in the future such as when they apply to college or apply for a job."
