I recently was given a bit of money as a graduation present. It's not a whole lot, but it should be enough to get me a new computer. Let's say I have $500 to spend, excluding tax. Chances are I will be taking a trip to Best Buy and I need to know what is the best possible set up I could get for the money I have to spend.
1. I am not a computer gamer. I'm a casual computer user. The typical stuff. (burn DVD's and CD's, watch movies, listen to music, play online games)
2. I multitask a lot, so I know I will need a decent processor.
3. I don't need some overpriced computer with 8GB of ram that I will never use. With Vista 3GB should be enough for me.
4. It can be just the CPU or a package deal(speakers, monitor, keyboard, ect) I don't know if I'm wanting to just get a new cpu, and keep my current speakers, monitors, or if I want all new stuff.
I know some of you will probably say wait until you get more money, but I'm fed up with my current set up. I would post the specs but some of you may laugh yourself to death and I don't want to be held responsible. I KNOW that there has to be a better computer I could get for $500, and I want to get rid of this piece of crap that I'm currently using.
Any advice or help would be appreciated.
One more question... if I were to take the hard drive from this computer and add it to a new computer, would it be exactly the same set up? Only with better processing speeds, and RAM? Or would that fail?
Their site is: http://bestbuy.com

Honestly Bestbuy is overpriced, now I hate to be the person giving this dumb answer, but like even if you bought some cheap ass parts i dont think 500 dollars can buy a good computer now a days but if you already have a piece of crap then I doubt you care, i dont really have any advice from BUYING from best buy but i bet after this post karakawe will probably give a good answer.
But i guess you could go to like Newegg.com and get some parts, maybe just use the case you have for your POS.

I suppose it doesn't have to be best buy, but there aren't really any other large electronics retailers near me. There was a Circuit City, but it went out of business, and there is a Fry's Electronics, but it's two hours away. The only other options would be online, which isn't an option for me, or Wal-Mart or something, which seems silly to me.

| I don't think I would settle for Best Buy's pricing. Fry's is great, as they often have good bundle deals and things, and there are online sites like newegg and TigerDirect.

Would a "AMD Athlon™ X2 4450e+ Dual-Core Processor" be much better than a "Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.40GHz"?
And what about:

Edit: Anything is better than what I have now. ^^

Don't worry, $500 is plenty sufficient for a media center PC, assuming you don't need peripherals just yet and are willing to put forth a bit of effort to construct your PC yourself.
Gigabyte P31-ES3G ($63)
Should be sufficient for a media center PC.
E8400 ($165)
Nice, powerful CPU. A bit on the pricey side though.
Corsair 400W PSU ($55, $45 after MIR)
Solid, reliable PSU from a reputable company with a single, powerful +12V rail.
Sony DVD Burner ($23)
It burns DVDs and is the cheapest drive on newegg at the time of writing. Also uses a SATA connection as opposed to an IDE connection.
4GB 800MHz G.Skill DDR2 RAM ($40)
Decent company, decent amount (selected board will only support 4GB anyway), decent speed and low CAS latency (5ms, which is a good thing).
320GB WD HDD ($50)
Cheap, reliable drive with a decent amount of space.
Antec 300 ($55)
Very solid case for a good, low price, considering that it had reached $70 at one point a few weeks ago.
Sapphire Radeon HD 4650 ($55, $45 after MIR)
More than sufficient for most uses, hell, it might even do a bit of gaming.
Whole thing totals out to about $485 after MIR, not including shipping charges. I'm sure you can spare an extra $20-30 for those, though. Also:

Oh god yes. Above has an E8400 however, so you won't need to worry much.

Essentially, yes, however you'd probably be better off adding it as a slave drive (selected board has 1 IDE connector you could attach your old hard drive to) and only use it to access any information/etc you might still need from it since the drive is probably a lot slower (5400RPM or lower most likely) than the one listed above.

Alright, however you could game on the rig above some.
2. I multitask a lot, so I know I will need a decent processor.
Done (E8400)
3. I don't need some overpriced computer with 8GB of ram that I will never use. With Vista 3GB should be enough for me.
Done (4GB).
4. It can be just the CPU or a package deal(speakers, monitor, keyboard, ect) I don't know if I'm wanting to just get a new cpu, and keep my current speakers, monitors, or if I want all new stuff.
System now, peripherals later.

Zarr's build is great on its own right, however you might want to consider getting this stuff instead:
CPU: E5200 - Similar performance for a fraction of the price. Very overclockable and it uses the same architecture as the E8400. If you insist on getting a more expensive processor, the E7400 is a good alternative.
Motherboard: GA-EP45-UD3R - Better-performing motherboard with a better chipset (and more features). Great motherboard layout too.
Optical drive: LG DVD Burner - Both of the drives are good, but this one has more customer reviews giving it a thumbs up.
PSU: OCZ StealthXStream - If you really, really need to save $10, you can go with this one. The Corsair VX400 performs well and has a high reliability. They're both good.
GPU: HD4830 - Bit expensive, by $30, but it should give you far better performance.
Plus all the other components used in Zarr's build, then the subtotal tallies up to be $450 including rebates, and not counting tax or shipping. You could probably even throw in this HD4870, but it would be some pretty extreme overkill, plus you'd probably go over your budget a bit.
It's pretty amazing what you can get with $500 these days.
If you truly need more CPU horsepower, you can get the Phenom II X3 710 and the GA-MA790X-UD4P, although you'll probably have to cut from the graphics card.

I would buy whatever you can in Walmart... yes I know... but they have
cheap prices. Then I would go to private stores or newegg.
