Hello developers,

Currently I am working on a project for mobile phones that can determain what type of airplane is flying above you, and how high it's flying when you see it flying over you. The first part of this project is determaining my own location. Now unfortunately not all mobile phones can make use of GPS, but a lot of phones share a platform independent programming language: Java (J2ME).

Now I was wondering if anyone here has had any experience with J2ME when it comes to determaining your location (coordinates) without making use of GPS. This means that your location will have to be determained using cell tower ID's and LAC (Location Area Code). If you do have some experience in this area, could you perhaps kindly point me in the direction of some open source libraries (not a complete application). I have already looked into Google Maps, which is a great piece of software, but goes far beyond what I actually need. all I need is a function that can retrieve my coordinates without GPS.

Many thanks in advance,
Ani

this is prolly not the best forum to ask on...but i can offer something to you

using the cell tower is not the best method to get exact coords because of how far the range can be. When i was staying in NH i was on a tower in Canada. I wasn't in Canada though. Just have that idea in mind.

I understand, but Holland is relatively small with a lot of towers to connect to. There is a maximum displacement of one kilometer, which is a very doable number. I have already used Google maps to read from several locations in the Netherlands, all of which gave a fairly accurate location without the use of GPS. Unfortunately using the Google maps API is a major pain in the *** according to the people who have used it before.

I know this forum handles different kinds of programming, but I figured I'd give it a shot since there are bound to be some real programmers around who have dealt with this type of thing.

Thanks anyway.
