too long for an essay on the works of Edgar Allan Poe, for a middle school?

Every essay I've written since middle school has been double spaced, so yes I took that into consideration. It's still long.

Its not that long, a girl in my class wrote a 13 paged non-double spaced report about folk tales.

Sounds it'd be a very verbose report. Brevity is a needed skill when writing essays.
Essays I write now are required to be 4-5 pages and no more than 5. If they are, points are usually docked because they're not concise. Of course there are situations that require longer papers, but I don't think you would encounter those before college.
