I'm going to use this as a portable hard drive and save for a zune.

I'm sure there's something you can do over simply using it as a HDD. Search around about jailbreaking for the specific player.
Sorry I don't really know names or examples, I've got an 80GB Zune myself, they're locked down tight.

They thought about protecting people from stealing it, but of course there are ways around it.
