I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 that I bought back in 2007. I use it mostly as a desktop so it is plugged in all the time, which I know kills the battery. I recently reinstalled windows due to a virus, and when I got it going again, the battery meter didn't work. I tried letting the battery run down, which took about 10 minutes, but no luck. I decided to let it go since the battery only lasted 10 minutes, but after letting the battery run down a few more times, it started lasting for over an hour, and now I would like the battery meter to work again. Any ideas would be appreciated.

you want to see the battery meter in the taskbar? i'm not sure that's what you mean, but if it is: control panel > power options > advanced, and tick the checkbox.

Right, and if it's already ticked, untick it, hit apply, then retick it and hit apply a second time.

Sorry I wasn't clear. The battery meter is shown in the task bar, but it just says 3% all the time.
