I formatted and installed windows home premium on a friends laptop which had 4gb of ram. I installed all the drivers and found that on Computer's Properties it shows that the laptop has only 3gb of ram after rebooting and installing drivers (it had 3gb before drivers were installed too, but only after reboot).

Drivers and software for laptop here.

The model of the laptop is: HP Pavilion dv5-1139tx Entertainment Notebook PC .

Solution to getting 4gb of ram back is greatly appreciated.

you installed 32 bit.
32 bit only recognizes 3 gigs at once.

Not always; it depends on the hardware installed (mostly gfx cards).

So it only shows 3gb but it's really 4gb? (Hopes...)

No, he's just stating that he doesn't recommend getting Windows XP x64.
Although, yes, you do have 4GB installed, although, it won't be utilized until you run a x64 Operating System.

32-bit Windows operating systems are only able to map the little-more-than-three-gigabytes of memory. It's unable to utilize any more than that.

this is wrong shh.

there is a bunch of things that need to be mapped into that 4gb of addressing space.

obviously it cuts into the amount of ram that is recognizable, it is not just a set number that magically goes missing, it's for a reason.

and yes, it is possible to use more than 4gb under a 32 bit kernel. PAE provides some trickery to do it, and even though an application can't use more than 4gb at once, the memory will be available.

So my friend can pretty much run an app that is 3gb and one that is 1gb (of ram required)?

No; that doesn't really even make sense at all. Shocked
