I am very fluent in Chinese verbal communication (both Mandarin and Cantonese), and I consider myself good at writing and reading characters.
Online translators only do good for common phrases, anything more than that (sentences for example) will usually output grammatically incorrect results.

My high school had Chinese classes also, but the downside was you must already know how to read and write to be in it. I mean what's the point of having that class if people who are interested in it are not welcome because of their stupid requirements.

To be very honest Google Translate stuffs up even the simplest of English.
By the way, I can speak fluent Chinese but I can't read or write Chinese very well.
