Vista does not use more than 1.5gb on my computer...
Also, i would like to explain something to you about RAM.
RAM is the same as workers.
4gb (4000mb) of RAM = 4000 working men.
Would you like 750 men ( 750mb RAM ) working hard while 3250 men (3.25gb) are sitting around doing nothing? That's what XP does.
RAM that is not used is RAM being wasted.
Vista uses so much RAM to open up programs faster. It is called Superfetch. It uses the RAM to open program faster.
Also, you most likely wont have full touch-screen functionality with XP. Maybe no capability AT ALL.
It could be going slow because the Vista + touch screen program... Just maybe.

Touch-technology is gay.
Forever.
The above is right, for the most part. I'm pretty sure touch screen functionality won't be reduced by using XP as touchscreen software has been around for a good time before Vista.
Thats purely speculation. HP could have made it that their specific program fucks you in the ass if you use XP. God knows.
Also, with those specs I'd use Vista.

No its right the other way.
Also vista has the problem that it uses ALL ram aka "workers" thats why I always recommend to have 4gb ram, and you should be fine.
I don't really belive vista use 4gb ram, never seen that atleast.
from 200-1500MB is common.

Seriously, You might have not optimized your system yet,Turn off Aero Glass And you will get a little bit more freedom.
You should play around with vista, I know vista will give more "power" to the programs you use more.
As it simple terms, if you launch Photoshop CS3 alot, Windows vista will say "This person likes photoshop CS3 alot, so i should give that program more power".
That is my experince to vista.
Although i dont know if this has been proven yet or not.

You might as well, Vista isn't horrible at all, just some things aren't compatible with it, but as time goes on, everyone will move to Vista. Like when XP came out, a lot of people dual booted between XP and Windows ME.
Also, that's a tight computer. Very pricey for me though.

Actually, Windows 7 is comming out soon, it will have nearly the same thing as windows vista but will use less ram and CPU usage, I heard it can run on a computer/laptop with 512mb of ram. ALSO, the start up menu will look different. It will look somewhat like a MAC.

Yeah, Wiki says they annouced in 2007 and said it would be a 3 year project.. so it's still awhile. I see the interface, looks pretty nice. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d8/Windows7Desktop.png

Leaks have been out on torrents and warez forums for ages, think I'll try it later tonight.
@OP:
Vista is worth it.
That notebook is not.

Aero is hardware accelerated, it will likely be faster than the regular theme.
It tries to keep commonly used programs in memory, so you'll get a lovely instant start / snappy feel. That's superfetch, yes it's normal that it's eating a GB of memory, and more, yes it will free it if something else needs it.
Vista 64 is more aggressive in how much ram it forks over than 32 bit, and it scales depending on how much you have.
