While it's possible to build a laptop, it is, at times, impractical to do so. If it has to be a laptop, I recommend you get it retail. Remember that a notebook will have a lot less potential for gaming power (best card available is a 9800x?).

If you want a good gaming laptop and have 1500+ to spend
Get an Alienware laptop!

There are a number of companies on the internet that build computers (I'm NOT talking about OEMs --dell, hp, etc.). Find a place that'll make what you want and buy from them. Just a recommendation over getting a conventional brand. You'll be able to actually use BIOS and know all the parts put into your computer.

I suggest you build your own with a base of 3GHz Core 2 Duo, a ATI HD4850 or NVIDIA 260 GT, or whatever they're called, and 4GB of RAM.
I don't know your needs, so these are just suggestions for a typical mid-highend gamer.

1st one with a P8600, 4gb ram and 64-bit Vista home premium
Costs: 1699$
And if you want, go crossfire (If you want to spend the extra money

I would go with the first because it's ~$500 cheaper, allowing you to add more parts you want to it. It's got ATI cards : a 3870 or two in Crossfire.
You can get the first with:
-Crossfired 3870s
-P8400 2.26GHz (3MB cache)
-illuminated keyboard. (lol)
-x64 Vista
-2x1GB DDR3 1066MHz memory
-default wireless, DVD drive, HDD
Subtotals around $1,675. If you considered getting the second one, you could add a 1920x1200 display for $200 if you wanted. Razz

Some things would be better to upgrade independently from AlienWare, since they'll rip you off... Rolling Eyes

Yeah, and that's for a Mobile extreme chip. Desktop parts are a lot better for what you pay for them. Unless you need a notebook for school or something, why not build a desktop? For that price, you could make a real machine, instead of the much-less potent laptop equivalent. If you want to convince a parent, that could be an argument for the desktop. Wink
