My ipod will only turn on when i plug into the wall charger.

I think something is wrong with your battery? I guess you should try replacing it. IDK.

let it charge for a few hours? it's probably not turning on because the battery is that dead.

That does happen to iPods, especially when you use an iHome or similar product and they charge all night. You CAN get it serviced for some price, I believe. Be sure to put your rechargeable batteries through an entire charge cycle at least every month: that goes for most every device.
