And the i7 extreme is cheaper than all of the C2Es (except the QX9650 by $15).
I'm actually looking forward to putting this technology to use. You're going to upgrade for them, Konata Izumi?

Core i7 is still a quad, but each core can handle 2 parallel threads making it to 8.
4 cores + 4 via new HyperThreading = 8

A Core i7 965 extreme tested is 133 percent faster in some cases than a X4 phenom 9950 black edition and is 97-85 percent faster in other applications.

Looking at the all the LGA1366 mobos out so far, I guess they've finally found an excuse to force DDR3 RAM on us. Maybe it will actually become more affordable sometime here.

Hopefully, yes.
That may be a benefit to waiting to upgrade, I suppose. We already knew it would eventually become a standard. To progress!

Eventually, same as DDR2 did. Once DDR3 becomes mainstream, production will increase and drop prices.

So I went on newegg and tried to configure a Core i7 system.
Picking the processor and motherboard was easy, but when it comes to ram... it's not as easy as it seems.
In order to optimized the memory, you must enable triple-channel and in order to do it you must get 3 pieces of DDR3.
Getting 6GB (3x2GB) was the easy task, but I went on and made a scenario where the person wanting the Core i7 already got
Vista 32bit which makes the max. ram to only 4GB.
Trying to pick out 4GB of ram (2x1gb) and (1x2gb) is not easy especially with the available selections at newegg. In order to take advantage of the Core i7 and DDR3 ram you have to
1. Get DDR3 with low latency timings and high frequency
At least DDR3 1600
2. 1.65v is the maximum memory voltage, anything higher and you can
say bye bye to your cpu.
But those good DDR3 1600 rams pass the max. voltage specs of 1.65v.
So as of now it's better off to wait until more ram with low voltages becomes available before jumping on the Core i7.

the 1.65v thing is old news. Its been fixed apparently

From the benchmarks I've seen, the third RAM channel does almost nothing. When I get my i7 system I'm most likely just gonna run it dual channel and be done with it.

i7 is pretty cheap. $319 for a processor. It's around the price you pay for a Q9550. I don't see any point in getting the 940 or 965, because you can just OC the 920 to the same speeds.
I believe some mobos have 6 DIMMs. So, 6x2GB = a whooping 12GB of RAM. I would just buy a 2GB DDR3-1600 and wait a year until the prices come down to get the other 5 sticks.

When it comes to Intel, telling them to fix a issue like the memory voltage restriction is very unlikely. I'm leaning more towards memory makers are going with Intel's guidelines and making higher speed ram that does not pass the 1.65v joe. But a link to where you got your info from will be nice.
As for the Core i7's
It's 4 physical cores and 4 virtual cores via HyperThreading
Technically make it to 8, of course it won't be as good
a processor with 8 physical cores.
And from benchmarks the new HT does bring improvements.
