'gaming' doesn't really elaborate on what games you're going to play.
If you're going to be playing mid-end games, you don't even need to spend need $3000, not to mention, you won't even need to spend up to $2000.
Although, for the MOST general games released so far, I'd go for this kind of rig:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 (unless you want a quad ...)
Motherboard: Any good P45 chipset board
RAM: 4GB DDR2 (don't get DDR3, not worth it, unless, overclocker whore)
HDD: Western Digital 640GB 16MB SATAII
GPU: ATI HD4870 OR ATI HD4870 x 2
Case: Thermaltake Armor+ or a CoolerMaster 690 w/ side windows! 
PSU: Corsair HX-620!
Optical Drive: ASUS 20x BLT-2014 Lightscribe SATA
CPU HSF: Noctua NH-U12P Performance CPU Cooler
Fans: Noctua NF-P12-1300 120mm Fan
If NVIDIA and for SLI motherboards, go for the 750i, 780i or 790i SLI chipsets. Like, the listed following:
Asus P5N-T
Asus Striker Series
EVGA/XFX 750i FTW, 780i, 790i

i was thinking of playing crysis-countestrike souce-halflife 2-unreal tournament 3-and when it comes out diablo 3
those kind of games
how much more for quad core??

You'll have a bit of trouble building a computer.
Crysis can run well on a $600-$700 USD computer. Generally, I think Mozilla's build is pretty good. I'd definitely go with a Q6600, or a Yorkfield equivalent. 2GB of RAM should be enough, 4GB is a bit overkill even for Crysis (1.5GB at the most, +300MB for the operating system and other processes). An HD 4850, or similar NVIDIA counterparts (8800GT - 9800GTX+) should offer better price/performance, while still being able to run your games well. For CPU fan, stock will do fine, even if you're going to overclock a bit.

No problem.
If you want to go with Quad Core, and want to go with the best. Get the Intel QX9775, although, it's very expensive and I'm sure you wouldn't possibly need that much power.

The Q6600 uses an older fabrication technique (65nm), and therefore, it produces more heat and can be overclocked less than it's newer (45nm) counterpart. Although, the Q6600 still manages to overclock to great levels and stays relatively cool. The Q6600 also comes in two different "flavours". G0 stepping and B3 stepping. G0 is the newer stepping and is a revised model of the Q6600 and allows it to be overclocked further.
If you were to be going with the Q6600 and the Q9450. The Q6600 would be the 'best bang for buck' (as most say), and the Q9450 would be the 'best at stock speed' and the Q9450 has good performance and efficiency and can be overclocked really well. If you're going to overclock with the Q9450, be notified that the max multiplier is at x8 instead of x9 (Q6600). Therefore, you will need a really good motherboard where you can get great FSB increments for that high overclock and performance boost.

Generally, yes, they would support 4 cores.

Do not get an "Extreme" processor. If you seriously want the best processor, wait for Nehalem. SLI and Crossfire are a waste of money. For RAM, you only need 2GB for most games, get a mobo with 4 RAM slots, they're more future-proof.

Sorry I'll say this is shit.
If you want a gaming computer get a DUALCORE.
But if you get a high clocked quad its also good so this is what I recommend by my own tries of different builds.
CPU: E84-6-00, Q6600, Q9550
GPU: ATI, 4870/4870X2 (4870 CF) if you got 3000AUS
RAM: XP, 2gb if you overclock much 1066 MHz, but id say if you overclock like me not that much (like from 2.2gHz to 3gHz) you'll be fine with 800mHz.
HDD: NOT RAPTOR, their expensive and you don't gain so much and they sound very much.
Either buy 2x 500/640/1000GB in raid 0 or a singel one and will get a bit slower then raptor.
PSU: Corsair 750watt would do it.

Any newer game is going to exploit multicore, in fact you HAVE to if you want to be a games for windows title.
