| The 9800GX2 is on par with the HD 4870, it is noticeably better than the HD 4850.

You definitely don't want an AMD CPU and nVidia card at this point.
A Q6600 and 4850/4870 would be a better buy.

like i was thinking lately.... im not sure about the amd, i have to ask my friend, but would it be better if i got 2 geforce 8800 ultra instead of 1 9800 Gx2  and btw im trying to keep this all under 950 bucks

Whatever you do, DO NOT GO WITH A X3 CPU!
20$ more and you get a quad...
I would recommend going with AMD Phenom series (the quad ones)
and 4850/4870
Or if you intend to overclock, go with Intel Q6600

You don't want nVidia during this product generation.
Get a pair of 4850's if you can afford it, otherwise just one works fine.

| No... It's designed that way. The AMD CPU architecture is that there's three cores, 1 core x 3. Intel's Quad Cores are actually 2 cores x 2.

wrong, they are just faulty phenoms and the only reason AMD do them and intel don't is because AMD use 4 true cores whereas intel use 2 duals.
if one of AMD's cores are bust they disable it and sell it as x3 if 1 of intels were they don't sell them
