Is it possible to "borrow" your neighbour's wireless internet connection?

One of my friends says that most of them have protection, but I live in a unit that has around 12 other families near it, so 1 of them is bound to have wireless that isn't protected.

And if it is possible, how fast would the internet be?

How fast? How far away is the wireless modem?
Also, is a member of the family currently browsing and using up bandwidth? Who knows.

Legal without permission, no.

you can use it even if it is protected, you just use aircrack, which will crack their WEP code...
Police do it all the time, so I don't see how we can get in trouble for it...

IF they have no protection its no problem, just connect and if they find out just say your laptop/pc accidently connected and tell them how to use a wep key.

Of course you can borrow theres alot idiots out there that don't protect there router if your using a desktop get a wireless ethernet pci cards else laptop automatically finds it

Nearly all wireless connections will have some sort of encryption on them and I highly doubt that you would find one that doesn't. Anyway, the speed depends on a) how far/close you are to the wireless router and b) what internet plan the "victim" has purchased. You can use any program to connect to the connection once found. Just use the Windows scan for wireless connections feature or you can download 3rd part applications that scan for wireless connections.

Using someone's wifi without permission is consider stealing.

If you want to use some wifi use those free pubic ones or get your own broadband.

Yes you can, if they don't have a password on it. And it's only fast if it's good enough and you are close enough. Usually it's protected by a password and it's illegal to hack it.

Well I'm under the age which is considered to be an "adult", so even if I do get caught, the most that can happen is a warning by the police.

I've done it.
Connection speed still depends mostly what connection they are using, then the range.
For cracking it download backtrack linux, it has all the tools needed.
Also i suggest you to read from google about cantenna.
This will gave you better range, so you'll have more WiFi's to crack.
Basically you can crack any kind of wifi that has WEP protection and some WPA's.
Read about it on aircrack-ng website.

EDIT: Actually there's a way to connect several wifi's at the one time, to obtain better speed, i think there was some kind of microsoft tool for that.
