I was Googleing your problem and found this:

I unno if it'll help. I only had one iPod and I had no trouble with it, luckily.

I tried this, didn't help
I also found these two:

http://www.oreillynet.com/mac/blog/2006/12/disappearing_ipods.html (not really helpful just someone saying everyone's getting that problem)

http://www.kruse.demon.co.uk/cant-mount-ipod.htm (some dude who managed to get through the "can't mount" problem when he tried to restore it like you)

Eh. That's all I can find.

This thread is to fix this issue, if it will work on another computer, then it's not a solution.

Well if it works on another computer you know it's not the iPod, but if it doesn't, you may need to get a new one.

If you plugged in your shuffle before installing iTunes, that may be the problem, as when you install iTunes, it installed the apple mobile device shit. Happened with my Touch when I first got it. Try updating the drivers through device manager?

Your computer is very fucking old.

But it shouldn't interfere with your iPod's communication with the puter.
