Hey,

I was running ATI tool for the first time on XP and I did "Find max core" and the tool kept automatically clocking it higher and higher. My original core clock was around 600 and at around 740 it started producing artifacts. Now, it still said "No errors found yet" but there were obviously some very serious artifacts. At this point I was iffy about how well I could trust this program. It clocked it to about 1000 before I shut down my PC. All the while my entire PC was lagging very badly and kept freezing every 5 or 7 seconds.

I gave it a restart and went to open MSN to talk to a friend about it, but as my computer was loading, it was doing the same kind of lag except not as bad. I opened task manager to make sure that no processes were taking up that much memory, and none were. Confused, I tried to open firefox to go google it. Firefox wouldn't open up, steam wouldn't open, nothing would open up. In fact, the MSN that I tried to open minutes before still hadn't opened. This is where explorer.exe froze up and went completely unresponsive. When I was trying to create a new explorer.exe process from task manager, it wouldn't open. Nothing would open or close from task manager. At first I thought it could have been related to the overclocking but I'm not so sure now. Obviously something must have been changed when it was overclocking that screwed this up. To make sure my card wasn't seriously damaged, I went on my Linux partition (which I'm on now) and loaded a 3D screensaver, which ran fine with no artifacts.

Conclusion: When my PC starts up, everything freezes, nothing opens up. This is probably due to ATI tool but 3D apps run fine with no artifacts or performance loss.

I have an 8600 GT graphics card. Can you guys help me here?

Bump? Can someone please help me with this? I know it's got about 50 views but no one can give one shred of advice?

Also a solution I found using google didn't work: sfc /scannow. Do you know if that would work if I ran it quick enough? Last time it just stayed there and no progress was shown on the progress bar. It wasn't frozen, it just wasn't doing anything, for those familiar with it.

Much help is appreciated in advance because I REALLY need to get XP working again.

This is why you do it manually.

Wipe ATI tool, wipe your drivers, and get everything with driver cleaner. Install latest BETA drivers and see.

I doubt you hosed anything on the hardware side if you're not crashing and getting horrible graphical errors.

Is there a way to install drivers manually? Since I'm on Linux, I can view and edit my Windows partition so if I know where I can put the drivers I can do it from here.

Why dont you just open task manager and close expolerer, and then open it again manually. ? Or try to start in failsafe mode.

Sorry for the bump I couldn't get on a PC for a while, but anyway I don't have safe mode on my dual boot since I had Ubuntu before XP and I didn't install XP's safe mode ._.;

I opened task manager and killed explorer but couldn't do much after that.
