i bought a new router yesterday for my XBox 360 Network Adapter and for my upcoming PS3 purchase.

It is a LinkSys WRT54G2 wireless router.

the set up is in theory relatively simple

Run set up disc -> set up router and go

well no not in my case, i do all that is required and get an error , error says that no new router was detected just the old one (never had another router..) talk to a LinkSys customer support agent who directed me to type in the default ip for the router into my address bar which would allow me to manually configure my router. did this which finally got it working and led my Xbox to pass and allowed me a quick Halo 3 game.

i head upstairs only to find that my computer's internet is worse than AOL's (i have comcast so it is pretty fast) and sooner or later my Xbox 360 begins to fail as well.

im wondering if any of you can offer some input into my problem.

I cannot give you rep for i still have to wait 929854719 seconds for some offence that i still dont really understand or even know about.. but you will have my thanks

it shouldn't matter what OS your using, or even if that computer's turned on for that matter (well for using the internet on that computer it will, but not for your xbox). if the router is setup properly, by entering the ip in an address bar, then you shouldn't have any problems. make sure that the cables are plugged in properly and then try reset the modem.

done many times over, i also have a peculiar way of connecting to internet, no ethernet cable... but yea i've tried it, ipconfig all, pinging everything checks out, however once i put in the set up disc and get the same error time after times, i believe that's when my connections starting falling apart at the seams

how does your router connect to your computer, if it's not by ethernet?

it could have something to do with your computer or vista then. i'm not sure what's wrong, but the people here have the same problem.

for some reason everyone i know that knows a little about computers has nothing but problems with their wireless routers its kinda weird, the people i know that have no clue about routers plug them in and they work flawlessly for them.

i have the same kinda problem as you, my internet is fast but it sometimes goes so slow i cant get on Google...

i have found however that connecting to the router manually and resetting it via the website controls gets my internet and router working fine again.

if its just your internet running really slow while the Xbox is on then you should know that the Xbox uses allot of bandwidth to run and stay online so if your expecting to play the PC and Xbox at the same time preparer for lots of lag.

Hah. I've noticed the exact same thing.
I would just hold the reset button for the 15/30 seconds or whatever the manual says and configure it through its IP address in a browser (if possible).
