why will you need a usb mouse to do it? i've done this before on a cousins computer and the touchpad worked fine with the windows drivers, until i installed the real drivers. and btw, some computers need you to slip stream, i think the AHCI (or something), drivers onto an XP disc for it to detect your SATA hdd.

Download the drivers for winxp(usually found in manufactures official site)
Either get a legal or illegal copy of winxp(Doesn't matters, theres a bypass to get the latest update anyway)
Install the OS
Install a AV before the drivers.

you should have split your hdd into two partitions (or three if you wanted one for backing up your work) and dual booted both vista and xp. if xp didn't work then you could always delete the xp partition and extend the vista partition back to original size.

I was going to but decided against that because of lack of ram.
