Comodo firewall/AV. Free and its nice.

Or avg free..I never liked it personally but hey its free.

nod 32 is better than avast......
avast detects even useful viruses and deletes it.........

eset smart security/nod32 ftw. eset smart security is the best anti virus suite i've used and it's the most resource efficient, as dm47 mentioned.

All AVs are crap, they don't stop any viruses. I used to have Norton and it sucked. Made my own rootkit, ran it when Norton scanned the system, it found no viruses lmfao. I would say Kaspersky AV 2009 is good. Funny thing is that it stops GG from using DKOM lol.
