Basically, I just want to start programming but i'm not sure which language I should start with. I have done very basic programming in the past (BYOND DM, HTML ..)

If there is anyone who could guide me in the right direction I would appreciate it. Smile

It depends which language you want to pursue, by the way, check the stickies, they have compilers and tuts for nearly every language.

Just a basic language that will help me to understand other programming syntax. Like a gateway drug, except with programming. :s

Start with C++. It's a disadvantage to go from C to C++.

There is no disadvantage, I don't know where you are getting that information from.

I would start with Basic (VB), or Javascript. Depending on your age... C++ may not be very easy or rewarding.

Lol wtf? How could that be possible? C++ is a superset language of C, which means upgrading only gets "better". You don't lose anything when you upgrade from C to C++, you gain more flexibility, along with OO programming.

Each language has it's own syntax, there isn't a standard that all languages follow. This shouldn't be a reason for you to want to learn programming. Beings that you are on a hacking forum, I would suggest going with C/C++ as well. It will probably be the most beneficial for you to learn.

I think what he is referring to is the fact that C++ going to C, you just learn some new methods/functions/api's while going from C to C++ you sort of have to unlearn some things and its sort of a different concept.

If you just want to know like extreme basics for all programming personally I would reccomend C++, thats what I'm doing. Anyways, whatever you choose you can always ask for help if you get stuck.

I think you have them backward lol..

C is the original. It contained no OO style coding, things were more strict, etc.

C++ was created as a superset language, contains new abilities, flexibility, functionality and introduced the OO side of programming into the language.

C to C++ would do nothing but "good". (I quote good because there are select few that think OO programming is the devil.)

C++ to C would be rough if you don't know the foundations of C itself. Things are a bit different. While ridding of OO isn't that hard, some more common things that people are used to in C++ wont work in C.

heh i would suggest learning C first, the OOP in C++ just makes it harder for a starter. C and C++ are basically just the same thing with C lacking the OOP part. I dont know why you would need to "unlearn" some things if switching from one to another.

Going from C to C++ is much better to do, since you will learn a lot more. You'll first learn how to program in a functional manner, then upgrading to C++ and learning OOP, templates, and still functional if you see the need.

Also, i would consider C to be a bit lower level language than C++ so you really get a better understanding of how the machine works ( without diving into ASM or the likes Razz ).
