my sister needs a graphics card (she's got a compaq with vista on it, and can't run any games), for 50 euros (80 USD) or less.

what i've found is a ATI Radeon HD2600 XT for 49 euro's, is it good for it's price? and will it beat an Nvidia 6800 Ultra (still stuck with my old shit)

i've found it on this website: http://www.musicstore.com/de_DE/EUR/Computer/Grafikkarten/Asus-VP-ATI-2600XT-256-HDTV-/-HDCP-/-2-x-DVI/art-PCM0007460-000 (sorry for the dutch language).

the minimum it needs to run is command and conquer 3 (which shouldn't be a problem, since mine beats the minimum settings for crysis)

Ironically I think that the HD2600 XT is worse than the 6800 Ultra...

Maybe not...
They have the same Fill Rate and Memory bandwidth, but the 2600XT has a faster core speed...

Hmm.... *waits for someone else to chip in on this*

btw, my 6800 uses agp 8x and the 2600xt PCI-E X16

Don't know about your specs, but I assume you have PCI-Express

Here's a good choice or 49 €

GeForce 8600GTS

NOTE: the 8600 GT and the 8600 GTS are usually the exact same price, but the GTS version has a better Texture Fill Rate -> Better Performance.

8600 GTS has a texture fill rate of 10.8 billion
8600 GT has a texture fill rate of 8.64 billion

Other than that, they are pretty much the same.

With only $80, you won't be getting much of an upgrade, even if you did buy in the US. Mostly because you use the AGP interface, which is widely considered obsolete. The best card you can get for that money from Newegg is an HD3650, which won't be a whole lot faster than the 6800XT. And that's from buying within the US. I'm expecting the European prices to be higher.

2600XT vs. 6800XT

I'm not sure (you'll have to check benchmarks), but I think the 6800XT will slightly out-edge the 2600XT. ATI, although it has faster specifications (example is the HD3870 vs. 8800GT), is slower than an equivalent clock speed NVIDIA card of the same class. Especially in terms of shader processors (ATI: more, slower shader processors, NVIDIA: less, faster shader processors).

You can get a 3850 AGP for about $140. It's a pretty good card and shouldn't be bottlenecked much by the AGP interface.

He has an $80 USD budget, and prices are higher in Europe.

I thought he said that he has AGP and was going to get a card for his sister...?

If that is the case, what type of slot does she have.

I think he means his sister's been using his old card, which was a 6800ultra, and she has an AGP slot.

my sister needs a GPU, on a PCI-E x16 slot (not 2.0, like the newest ones use, unless it would actually work), i'm using a 6800 Ultra on an AGP 8X slot, but i don't need one, since i only use it for music production (wif mah epic soundcardz).

i can't just give the 6800 to my sister, for these reasons:

1. i've got AGP 8x, she's got PCI-E x16, and i've searched enough, but can't seem to find any converters
2. i need it, since my gaming mobo doesn't have a VGA port (using acer VGA monitor with a converter
3. i don't know, but does an old high-end card need more power dan a low/mid-range new card

btw, don't know if it matters, but she has a microATX mobo, and it's on the other side of the case in comparison to mine, i've got it on the right, she on the left (looking from the front)

Does the PCI-e card need to use a low-profile bracket (smaller desktops)?

What kind of gaming needs does she have?

What is her current graphics card?

PCI-e 2.0 is backwards compatible.

she currently uses an Intel GMA onboard.
her needs aren't so incredibly high, but it has to be able to play command and conquer 3 on 1440x900 on medium to high settings

Did you read my post?

Buy a GeForce 8600GTS
Should be powerful enough to play at those settings.
