I just recieved 450W Corsair PSU for my 9600gt card.
I took out my old 305 watt PSU and hooked up my new PSU
Everything was plugged in the same way my old PSU was plugged in.

I also put in my 9600gt graphics card.
I used 2 6pin cables from my new PSU to fit the 6pin to 4pin converter.
Then I booted my pc everything was fine for about 30min I smelt a burning smell from my PC then my whole PC shut off, and it wouldnt turn on .
Later, I plugged in my old PSU and put in my old graphics card in and everything was fine again, except my new PSU wouldnt work anymore.
I have a 60 month warranty bleh bleh bleh.

information:
my psu - http://shop4.frys.com/product/5539780;jsessionid=3qej6lWlTHZ4QXAL1s3IuQ**.node2?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
my graphics card - http://shop4.frys.com/product/5504510;jsessionid=GVddiCDsdLn4uthf9v1mkA**.node1?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

SHOULD I BUY A HIGHER POWERED PSU?
WHY IS THIS?

rep+ for help

Yeah you should get a higher powered PSU. Graphics cards take up a lot of wattage and you got lucky that your entire computer didn't fry. PSUs are the most important part. Don't get the min. amount of watts to power your computer. Go like 100 more just for assurance. Going minimum doesn't allow your parts to go a lil farther then stock and if you push it, they will blow.

I still wonder why my PSU hasn't died yet. I'm really stressing it with a quad core, 2GB of RAM, an 8800 series graphics card, and dual hard drives.

It probably isn't a wattage problem, just a faulty PSU I guess.

BTW: You got ripped off on your graphics card. Badly ripped off (you could get an HD4850 at Newegg for the same price after rebates).

so if my entire pc didnt fry, my graphics card should still be fine right? well i did get my psu at "frys". i still can't believe a tiny ass fan for my graphics card would take up so much wattage.

It's not just the fan, it's another processor.

So how much watts will it take up? (maximum)
Also, will this cover it? --> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341005

That's way too much. You'll end paying a lot more than you need to. Not only for the power supply, but also your power bills. A 500W PSU should be more than sufficient for most single-card solutions.

I have that same setup... whats wrong with that? It wont "stress" your PSU as long as you didnt buy a shit brand.

I'd try RMA'ing the PSU and if the second one does the same thing buy a new one.

As superweapons said, a 500w should be enough.

is it the higher u overclock, the high watts it takes up?
and i dont know if me plugging anything wrong would be the reason for my 450 psu to burn out cuz it was working for like 30min then BOOM my whole pc shut off. well i'll go with a 600watt to be safe
