Graphics cards are mostly determined by your motherboard interfaces, rarely by your operating system (although you'll have a hard time finding ATI drivers for Linux).

I don't think you want the absolute best graphics cards, as their prices are usually above $600 a piece. Some good video cards for the PCI-e interface are the NVIDIA 8800GT, 9800GTX+, and the ATI HD4850, and if you have a large budget, the HD4870.
The best you can get on the AGP interface is the NVIDIA 7800, or the ATI HD3850.
For PCI, lets just say you need to upgrade more than your graphics card.

The motherboard is pentium 3. When I meant the best, I mean around $1500 or below but cheaper ones such as ATIHD4850 are alot better for some extra cash.

Edit: Change my mind about spending $1500 on a video card, just need a great working card that I can get at Fry's that is compatible

i dont think that they even have 1500 dollar video cards.
you can get an amazing computer for that much. (very amazing hi tech gaming machine, 4 gigs of ram quad core processors, double video cards.)

If you have $1500 to spend, you need to upgrade more than your video card. You can build a decent system with a $1500 budget.

lol, u wont get "great" video card for a "pentium 3 mainboard" (AGP slot). If you buy a decent AGP card, ur processor wont utilize 100% of ur graphiccard, bcz the processor is too weak. The cards that u need are outdated.

I recommend u to check flea markets, or places where they sell cheap and old pc hardware, and just pick a graphiccard from a pentium 4.

Nvidia GeForce 9600GS or higher would be good. 2-3 steps down from top would be decent and cost-efficient.

Motherboard pentium 3 = most likley support AGP graphic cards.

ATIHD4850 and everything else they sell nowdays are PCI(e) cards.

With $1500 to spend, you can get much more than a "decent setup". Even with half the budget, you can almost get a quad core and a 4850 or 9800GTX if you build it yourself.

If you use a Pentium 3, you'll need much more than a graphics card upgrade. Yes, they have $1000+ video cards for CAD. Look at the ATI FireGL and NVIDIA Quadro series graphics cards.

The OS don't matter, it's the motherboard. If you have a pretty decent recent motherboard, of course money is a big factor, the new nivida GTX 280 is out. Or just stick with an 8800 GT if money is an issue.

Are you kidding me?

The Geforce 9600 GSO is a renamed 8800 GS. This tactic has been seen before, like with GeForce 7900 GTO to clear unsold stock when it is obsoleted by the next generation.

If you have 1.5k laying around you really should just consider buying a new computer. You wouldn't even need to buy a new hard drive and reinstall everything either, you could use your current hard drive and download whatever drivers you need.
Especially since P3's are very old, buying just a new video card may not help as much as you think it will.
