im getting a new computer soon, and i want to use 4 gigs of ram.
someone told me that 32-bit o.s.'es dont recognize that much ram, so that got me thinking....
are there any 64-bit versions of windows xp sp3?
or can a 32 bit take all ram?

A 32-bit OS will run with 4GB of RAM, but it will only recognize about 3.25GB of it. I"m pretty sure it all gets used, but if you want to see all 4GB, you will have to upgrade to a 64-bit OS.
Windows XP SP3 has a 64-bit version. If not, you can install SP3 onto Windows XP SP2 x64.

You can get around that with the hackish PAE, but Windows will limit you to 4gb anyway.
Your shit needs to be mapped in memory somewhere, video memory is what usually ends up taking the biggest cut. If you have 512 of video memory, that's where half a gig of your RAM is going off too.

i don't think it would be worth buying a 64-bit OS, but it's your choice.

I have 4GB of RAM.
I have Windows XP, and it detects 3.5GB of RAM.
If you want to utilize all 4GB of RAM, then, get a 64-bit Operating System.
Although, I don't think you'd utilize them all, if you do think you will, please list the programs that you WILL use or you use daily ... because 4GB of RAM is still not common and I don't think you'd need that much. But I could be wrong.

You DO use the RAM, it just doesn't show that you are using all of it, when in actuality, you are using all of it. Either the kernel or for the graphics.

Windows limits it to 4gb with PAE, however with PAE you should technically be able to get away with 64gb. PAE itself is kind of hackish, so I don't know how well it actually works in practice, but there are some Linux kernels floating around that can do it probably.
You can't use that missing ram, windows limits it to 4gb, other shit gets mapped there instead.

Why not get 4 gb of rams. Price 65-80. I consider that pretty well priced.
