I personally didn't learn any language from reading books. I think all of them don't give you enough information. Just download Visual Studio 2008 and MSDN library (2.8 GB of stuff). Read the C/C++ Reference section in MSDN first to learn C/C++. I also recommend you read the Windows API section as you'll be using a lot of that. Then, if you wanna use MFC, read the MFC section. That's all you'll need to know. Took me around 30 hours.
