I would personally go with xp until updates/support are canceled.

Vista on the other hand isn't that great of an os. Ubutu is a better os if you pimp it up.

as you can see ubuntu clearly wins in the gui and performance.

Have fun playing anything that doesn't have an OpenGL renderer
