Probably the only difference would be the technology... not the performance.

Well with newer technology people should expect better performance.
I'm sure superweapons knows, so I'll bump this until he responds lol.

The 9800GTX is a little bit faster than the 8800GTS (512MB). The 8800GTS is slightly slower than the 8800GTX.
The 9800GTX probably draws less power and doesn't get as hot with the new G92 core (G92 = 65nm, G80 = 90nm). Also, it supports PCI-e 2.0, which doubles the bandwidth compared to the regular PCI-e (x16). The 8800GTX does have a larger bus width (384-bit compared to 256-bit).

Also, if I am not mistaken, 9800GTX supports direct x 10 for 64bit processers, while 8800 does not.... (I could be thoroughly mistaken.)
I have 2 7800 SLI'ed and I cant complain at all. The graphics are so fucking kick ass....

It depends.
If you are using it for DX 10.1, get Geforce 9 X2 OR RadeonHD 3870 X2.
If you are using for Dx10 ONLY then 8800GTS/X will be good To have smooth Gaming.
I have found the benchmake for G9 vs RadeonHD

Yeah, you're wrong.
It's a die shrink, and is slower than the 8800gtx in some cases because of the crippled bus.
