i encrypted a password and want to save it in some type of file so it can be retrieved and verified at a later time.

i was wondering which one i should save it to. registry or ini or anything more powerful/safer.
i kinda like ini since it can be edited even its hidden. that means i can place it anywhere and save my password in hidden state.

i personally would use a the registry. I like it more. You can save lots of data without the user even knowing it.

That's a bad reason. I would use the registry. It's more hidden and is preferred by MSDN

If you are unsure, you can find the registry functions here:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms724875(VS.85).aspx

And more info about the registry:

I'd prefer a file over registry. On Windows, it's freaking annoying when the size of your registry grows fast like a weed does and then the registry is all full of crap + messed up, etc. Somehow, I find settings stored in files a bit (well.. A lot) "cleaner" than registry ones. Also, they're way easier to port from comp to an another.

I do agree that if you're using files, you should go for XML.

PS. This is my opinion. I've never liked much about the Windows registry :)

I tend to agree with this for the same reasons. A lot of programs that have crappy installers and uninstallers do not remove their "footprint" in the registry so even after you uninstall the program, theres still crap left over in your registry from it.

Then programs that don't even have installers use the registry and yea.. you are left with those entries either way.

I personally stick to INI and XML. When you are done with the file, you can easily remove it.

In this case i'd use Registry, but please do make an external program (Uninstall.exe) to delete the keys when people want to remove the software, i use ini so people can easly manualy remove all the files and leave no traces in the registry.

o if thats the case. then saving to ini would be much simpler. since only 1 API is needed, writeprivateprofilestring.

The registry can be a little safer towards the average noob messing with someones computer. Someone that doesn't know a lot can easily tamper with the file, but in most cases either wont know what the registry is, or even how to open it. But overall for the password itself, they give the same level.

yea my target is not average noobs. most likely would be pros.
even if the noobs find out about it, they probably can't do anything
my encryption is something like
Code:

De 筽熥?軙渣穐祝醋屮?BU髧?阢#9'5    =%q l:PH#P
3J
=OuW
KY

Either way, it could be easily decrypted when it's disassembled. Also, disassembling would show the location of a created file, and if you access the registry.
